Spain Begins Talks with Türkiye Over KAAN Fighter Jet

Spain has reportedly started discussions with Türkiye regarding the TAI KAAN as part of its search for a next-generation fighter aircraft.
According to reports in the Spanish media, Spain is continuing to evaluate alternatives beyond the F-35 program, with the KAAN fighter jet developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) emerging as one of the prominent options.
The reports state that contacts between the two sides are still at an early stage. Potential cooperation models involving technology transfer and joint production are also reportedly being discussed. It was noted that the partnership structure applied in the TAI HÜRJET program could serve as a model for KAAN, allowing Spanish defense industry companies to take an active role in the project.
Meanwhile, HÜRJET is reportedly being evaluated in Spain under the name “Saeta II” as a next-generation trainer aircraft and could potentially be used in the future training of KAAN pilots.
KAAN’s first deliveries to the Turkish Air Force are targeted for the 2028–2029 period, while Spain is also expected to receive its first HÜRJET aircraft around the same timeframe.
